Graduation Party Invites



So it has been pure chaos around here with all of the school functions going on. I feel bad that I'm not helping out with the book fair this week but I'm tied up with the science fair. Truth be told, I like the science fair a lot more. Tomorrow is the judging. We have live animals at the school now. One of the 6th graders brought in an incubator and I hear there was a chick or two hatching. Another 6th grader brought in a rat for their project. I didn't have time today to look at them but I'm hoping after they've been judged I'll have the calculations done and can walk around and look at them all.

I have a friend graduating from college next month. A couple of other friends are organizing the party for her. One called me and asked me to help print the invites. No problem. I got everything typed up, a couple of choices for fonts, etc. I ran it by her before printing them to be sure I had all the details that she wanted on them. I came home and opened the box to start printing. The invites were postcard size, minus a 1" eyelet border. That wouldn't work. I ended up using cardstock and punching the bottom. Too boring with a plain white front. Our friend likes peonies. In fact, that is what we are getting her - a peony in a decorative pot ($135). I stamped the front with Pretty Peony stamp and went real simple because I had an hour and half to get 40 invites done. They are simple but they are pretty and her style.

Branch Out


This card just happened. I pulled a set off the shelf to make something quick just to say that I stamped today and played with a texture plate. I've had them for a couple of months and didn't even break the seal on the wrapper until tonight. I'm impressed with how deep the impression is. I read comments from others that they wanted it deeper and were able to achieve the results they wanted by spritzing the paper. I like what I ended up with. I suppose sometime I should try spritzing and see what happens, perhaps I will prefer that more.

Great Friend

It has been a while since I got any stamping done. My desk, well it couldn't be seen, therefore, I couldn't stamp. Saturday I took the time to sort the papers, mail, etc. and get it all put away. This started because we had an early game on Saturday but it had rained. I needed to locate the paper from the team to see if it had a number for cancellation information. No number on the paper so we went to the field and the game was on. While they let us play, they canceled the game after us because of the muddy conditions of the field. I'm glad they played because it is hard to reschedule them and it usually requires some juggling of our schedule.

Daisy


The DD Daisy set that SU retired years ago is one of the sets that was on my first order. Daisies are my favorite flower. I have been needing to send of some cards to thank people for their willingness to help and the work they have done to make so many different things happen. I haven't been too good about getting the cards made to write the notes so I pulled out an old favorite and made some super quick cards.

Pies - Part 2


Not 15 minutes goes by after the decision to make strawberry pies and she springs on me she wants to make an apple pie too. Sure, we can do that. We baked the frozen pie shell for the strawberry pie and she made a crust from scratch and we put in the frig to deal with after school. I'm so glad we did that.

Our son had a baseball game and was dressed and ready to go. I suggested he call his dad to remind him and check that he is on schedule to come home and go on to the field. He didn't have time and wanted me to take him. Sure, as long as you are home in time to get a pie out of the oven.

Everything is flowing. The bottom crust is in the pie plate. She is peeling and cutting apples. A long process for an 8 year old but she was diligent and stayed focus on getting this done for the talent show. Next thing I know my son is commenting on the zipper on his pants and how it is weird. Um, yeah. Honey, your zipper is broken. I suggested he wear his shirt out and that is against the rules. He had an old pair of baseball pants that color but they were too small. I had to explain that his game is in half an hour. The nearest sports shop is 10 min. away and I'm still helping his sister with a pie.

She was plugging along pretty well on her own. I suggested I could sew them up he just wouldn't be able to go to the bathroom. So there I am, with him wearing his britches, sewing them up. I thought it was convenient that he had a cup on - sort of like a thimble to protect him from aim with the needle. Another call to dad saying you've got to take him, I can't do this. I knew he didn't understand the why but he did drop his work and come home to get him to the game. The pie turned out really well and she was most proud that two people asked her for the apple pie recipe.

Apple Pie

1 Pate Brisee (recipe follows)

8 tart apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1" chunks or thinly sliced

1/2C sugar

juice of 1/2 lemon

1t cinnamon

1/4t ground cloves

pinch of nutmeg

1T flour

2T cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

1 large egg beaten with 2T heavy cream, for egg glaze

sugar, for sprinkling on top

For a double-crust pie, roll out half the dough to a thickness of 1/8-inch and use to line a 9-inch pie tin, leaving a 1-inch overhang. Roll out remaining dough to a diameter of 12-inches. Chill both crusts, covered, until firm, at least 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 375. In a large bowl, toss together apples, sugar, lemon juice, spices, and flour. Spoon into pie shell, dot with butter, and cover with remaining pastry circle. Cut several steam vents across top. Seal by crimping edges. Brush pastry with egg glaze and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown and juices are bubbling. Let cool on wire rack before serving.

Pate Brisee

2-1/2C flour

1t salt

1t sugar

1/2 lb. (2 sticks) cold, unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

1/2C ice water

Place flour, salt, and sugar in bowl of a food processor. Add butter and process for 10 seconds, or just until mixture resembles a coarse meal.

With machine running, add ice water, drop by drop. Stop as soon as dough holds together, even if there is water left over. Better the dough be a little crumbly than wet or sticky.

Divide dough in half and turn out onto to large pieces of plastic wrap. Press dough into flat circles, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least an hour, or freeze for later use.

April Fool's


I wish I could have been home for the second round of today's joke.

Before I took our son to school we put Jello on my husband's towel. It kind of made a powdery mess on the counter so we spritzed it with water and added more on both sides. A mistake. You shouldn't wet the towel because the Jello becomes vibrant and much more visible.

Imagine my surprise when I came home from dropping him off to see DH standing at the sink shaving with the towel wrapped around his waist. I could see the Jello and wondered why he wasn't noticing it. I suppressed my giggles and got a pair of socks. After he was done and had a wet hand, he went to wipe it on the towel. He told me our son must have taken his towel through dirt for April Fool's day but he should be happy because at least he hung it up.

I was cracking up. I fessed up that it was Jello. He was a little arrogant and stated that wasn't really gotten because he hadn't even showered yet and he noticed the grit before he used it. I couldn't resist. When he was in the shower I got his clean towel that he had gotten out and sprinkled Jello on it again and left with the girls for school.

I talked with him later this morning and he said he was mad for a minute but then he laughed about it. He wants to know if it is safe to come home after midnight or should he just wait for morning.

Pies - Part 1

So, in my last post I mentioned there was a talent show at church. My oldest daughter chose to do a magic trick. I thought that was interesting choice because it isn't something she expresses a whole lot of interest in but she does like to put on a show.

I already mentioned that I was impressed that one of the girls came up with math. I thought she would choose something like piano but definitely a good choice for her.

Last, but not least, is my little sidekick. She is always in the kitchen with me when I'm making something. Usually she will help, sometimes she needs to watch due to what I'm doing or time. I asked her what she was going to make. Strawberry pie. Perfect! How easy can it be? She has helped make 2 of these pies in the last couple of weeks. A quick run to the store from some frozen pie crust, strawberries and Jello and we are good to go.

Strawberry Pie

1C sugar
3T cornstarch
1C water
3T strawberry Jello
2 qts. strawberries, stemmed and halved
1 - 9" pie shell, baked

Mix the sugar, cornstarch and water in a saucepan; stir constantly, cooking until thickened. Remove from heat, stir in gelatin until dissolved. Pour over strawberry halves; mix well. Pour into shell; refrigerate until set. Top with whipped cream or topping. 6-8 Servings.

Hooked on Templates


There is a template challenge over at sbelements. I liked the template and decided to give it a go. Stuck with the Sunday Afternoon kit because I have it on my laptop still. Based on the colors of the kit, I chose to use pictures from Easter last year.

The girls had their talent show tonight at church. They chose well for what they like to do. I was kind of impressed when one of them came up with math. All of our kids are strong in math but I never would have thought of that and she does do it well.
